Cajun French: la rue (la rū) – street
On Saturday mornings if we are close to a Farmers Market we’re headed that way for the opening bell. We are also looking for breakfast as most also have breakfast vendors with the markets. When we’re in our home area of Baton Rouge, we’re pointed to the Red Stick Farmers Market. This morning we decided to look elsewhere and step out of the box for our Saturday morning treat.
After the market we needed to pick up dry cleaning and noticed a non-descript building with a couple sitting outside. On the building was Street Breads. We asked the employee at the cleaners about Street Breads and she described it as a cross between Subway and Jimmie Johns but much better. We were looking for a different breakfast so we were in.
The back wall, seen upon entering, is a mural painted by Chor Boogie, international street artist. Boogie was in Baton Rouge painting a mural for the Museum of Public Art in South Baton Rouge and agreed to paint for Street Breads. The mural is very vivid and reminded us of the 1960s and 1970s.
Because each order is individually prepared and cooked to order, Street Breads will custom make any dish from the many ingredients on their food line. But, they offer six different breakfast sandwiches – problem was they all sounded superb. In the end we decided on the Cajun Frittata and Garden Frittata sandwiches along with River Road Coffee.
One of the allurements, as one would expect from an establishment with a name like “Street Breads”, is good bread and when making a sandwich it’s really important — they came through. The Cajun Frittata Breakfast Sandwich was made to order and it began with fresh bread. The sandwich was spicy both from jalapenos in the contents and from a remoulade. If this is your choice you need to like spicy, and if you do you will not be disappointed. The meal was great, adequate in size, satisfying and we would eat it again.
Garden Frittata Breakfast Sandwich was made to order with fresh bread. The sandwich was bursting with flavors especially the warmed blue cheese and corn relish. The vegetables had teeth to them and provided a satisfying meal. It was adequate in size and we would eat it again.
The interior of the sandwich shop was 1970s modern in the lounge area with the table and chairs a minimalist design. The interior projects an open and clean feeling. The staff was welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable regarding the menu items.
We enjoyed our breakfast and plan to return for lunch or dinner as well as breakfast.
