Cracked Wheat Burgers

Cracked wheat is high in fiber and health benefits and great for any diet.

Always being on the lookout for new items or new ways to use various ingredients, cracked wheat came to mind for our bean burgers.  Although this is not a new way to use cracked wheat, for us it is new.  The cracked wheat gave the burgers a nutty crunchy taste and we liked it.  The dish has firmness and weight, definitely is filling.

Cracked Wheat Burgers

  • 1 cup cracked wheat
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 can (15.5 oz) black beans
  • 1 ½ cups oats
  • 1 cup onion, chopped fine
  • ½ cup mushrooms, chopped
  • ½ green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed and chopped
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp Cajun seasoning
  • 2 tsp Crystal hot sauce
  • BBQ or Steak Sauce
  • 1-2 Tbl Olive Oil

Place cracked wheat in bowl and pour 1 cup water over  wheat.  Let sit for 1 hour.  Drain excess liquid.

Mash beans with their liquid.  Add beaten egg and blend.  Add onion, mushrooms, bell pepper, and garlic nd mix well.  Add seasonings,  blend.  Add oats and cracked wheat and mix until well blended.

I divide the mixture in half.  Place half the mixture in bowl and chill for about an hour.  After chilled, form into patties.  Heat oil in skillet to medium high and cook patties about 3-5 minutes on each side or until desired
doneness.  I use a cast iron skillet so I use less olive oil.  Makes about 8, 3” patties.

Place the other half in baking dish and form into loaf.  Bake in 350 preheated oven for 30 minutes.  After 30 minutes, pour BBQ or steak sauce over top and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
