Silicone Egg Rings

Cajun French: l’oeuf (l’uf) – egg

We love kitchen gadgets and have had more than we can count or remember.  Since embarking on our RV Lifestyle, our gadget collection has shrunk to the bare essentials.  One essential, for us, is an egg ring which we use not only for eggs, but for pancakes and grits cakes.  We have been using metal ones and they work well except the metal scratches, not real happy about that.  We were in a kitchen store recently looking for a mandoline, another essential for us, and we noticed silicone egg rings.  They were a little more expensive than the metal but we decided to give them a try.   We use silicone spatulas and would not be without them.  We have seen bakeware yet were never really interested in trying it out.  That said it seems silicone items would be great for an RV Kitchen, easily stored and can take the bouncing around (for a later post).

The first thing we noticed was that the silicone egg ring was larger than the metal, and we liked that –larger pancakes and grits cakes.  We also liked that the rings seemed to adhere better to the skillet, less seepage of egg.  The top of the handle is also silicone and not wood which should make for a longer life.

So far we are very happy with the silicone rings.  Happy enough to try another silicone bake item.

We cannot say anything about the safety of silicone.  In reading we found articles where the author is very concerned about the safety and in other articles it is believed there is no safety issue.  Our metal rings were “non-stick” and the finish would chip off every time we had to use a knife when the egg stuck to the ring.  That does not seem very safe.  In the end each user must satisfy themselves with any safety concerns regarding any products used.

We are happy with our silicone egg rings and look forward to using them in future recipes!
