Cajun French: le récoltier (lu rā-kōl-tee-ā) – Farmer
Having to go to Zachary, LA on Saturday, the first thing we did was look for a Farmers Market in the area. Sure enough, Zachary has a Farmers Market downtown from 8-Noon on Saturdays. The market is two years old and recently moved downtown near City Hall.
Although it is small, there were nine food vendors and four craft vendors the Saturday we visited with a large variety of items for sale. These included blueberries, a variety of tomatoes, pickled Quail eggs, chicken eggs, free range chicken, squash, eggplant, old fashioned tea cakes, stone ground cornmeal and peppers to name a few. We had just shopped the Red Stick Farmers Market for our weekly groceries yet we purchased stone ground cornmeal and red sweet peppers. Sometimes when we find something unique and fresh we just can’t resist.
We enjoyed shopping and talking with the farmers. They were more than happy to talk about their farms and what they were producing.
The Zachary Farmers Market mission is to provide high quality fresh local produce to the community as well as a gathering place for residents.
