Farmers Market – Ponca City OK

Cajun French: la gombo fevi (lu gom-bō fā-vee) – okra

Saturday was overcast but farmers market junkies are not deterred by weather, so we headed out to the farmers market in Ponca City OK. The market is held in the shadow of The Pioneer Woman Statue on one of the streets on the grounds. The market was small yet we always appreciate the line of vendors sharing their variety of vegetables and fruits. These fresh from the garden, picked the day before or the morning of the market, produce are what encourages us get up early on a Saturday morning and come away with freshness you could not find in a supermarket. As is sometimes the case, in addition there was a duo playing and singing, which added a delightful addition to the market. These artists add an atmosphere of community to markets which kinda puts you into the mood of the day.

After walking the market and checking out everything offered, we made our  way from vendor to vendor. We found small young okra which we love to grill with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We also bought vine ripe cantaloupe and tomatoes, and small fresh potatoes. We love fresh farm eggs for their uniqueness, flavor and color and purchase them wherever and whenever we find them. We could have purchased lots more, but traveling in an RV causes us to be very conscious of what we purchase. Storage is at a premium and sometimes we have to make difficult decisions since all fresh items look delectable.

After spending time listening to the music, we headed to the car. As we were walking away, it began raining ever so lightly. The rain however, did not put a damper on our Saturday ritual as we headed back home with our fresh from the farm items.
