Cajun French: la pomme (la pom) – apple
Farmers market – the name resonates with us. They are so much a part of our travels and at times determines which direction we head. Some markets are so so and other are exceptional, large and small, great selection or mainly the same items. For us, none of that matters. What matters is local, fresh and seasonal. And the creme de la creme is making two markets while parked in one location.Montague, MI was one such place. And even better, we were able to walk to the market from the RV park. Montague is a small town, under 3,000, yet has embraced the farmers of the area. The market has a dedicated pavilion and parking area. Although we were able to walk to the market, the parking area was crowded. We soon realized the area supports the farmers and this is always a great thing.
Traveling in the northern U.S., we soon learned farmers markets are seasonal. Montague market begins the first Saturday of June and ends the last Saturday of October. The Wednesday market is open July through September. The hours for both markets are 9-1. We were told a few farmers will begin selling in May offering honey, maple syrup, baked items and some cold weather vegetables (asparagus, rhubarb and greens).
The selection at the market was exceptional and decisions were difficult. We try to buy only for a few days yet sometimes we cannot control our purchases. The Wednesday market was our first shopping and our basket contained tomatoes, peaches, bread, jam, lettuce and peppers. On our Saturday trip we purchased potatoes, apples and broccoli.
Laurie was ready to load up, but our storage is limited and we can only eat so much in a week. Sometimes we find farmers markets where the produce and homemade items call to us and Montague MI was one such place.
Happy travels and many adventures along your journey.
