Going to Springfield, LA on business; not very exciting.
Springfield, LA, typical small Louisiana town. Once while camping at Tickfaw State Park and looking for decent bread (forget the grocery store) we ended up at the Subway in town and bought a couple foot long loaves… no, just the bread! I guess that could be a travel tip.
Anyway, we’re looking for a place to eat and we know it’s not Subway. “Places” on my Android came up Charlie’s Restaurant and we thought, “why not?” We much prefer local establishments over chains, so to Charlie’s we went. There is nothing about the outside of the building that would draw you in. It is clean and well-kept but nothing outstanding. Walking in was the same, clean, bright, modern; just a typical small town restaurant. They open at 11:00 and we arrived about 11:15. There were three tables with customers and everyone seemed to know each other; typical of a small town. The menu was extensive offering everything from sandwiches to specialty platters. We opted to share a fried platter of fish, shrimp, and oysters with sweet potato fries and hush puppies along with two small salads.
What we received was a mouth-watering platter of the freshest seafood available. The shrimp tasted like they were right out of the Gulf. The oysters were sweet and soft. The fish melted in our mouths. The batter on the shrimp and oysters was perfect; not a heavy coating. It was just enough coating to let the true taste of the shell fish come out. The hushpuppies were some of the best we’ve had in a while. They were not over fried yet crispy being flaky in the center.
Would we return – YES
