Michigan is amazingly very rural. Because of this there are great number of farmers, or people who live on lots of land and raise large gardens. The makes for great Farmers Markets and our last market to shop in Delta County was Rapid River Farmers Market. The market is on Wednesday afternoon in downtown Rapid River. Fresh Whitefish from Lake Michigan
We were camped on the Eastern shore of Little Bay de Noc, way up at the North-Western end of Lake Michigan. Across the bay is the small town of Gladstone which hosts a farmers market on Mondays. The market has afternoon hours so we toured the town during the morning (that is another blog), enjoying the waterfront and lighthouse. Arriving in Delta County MI we thought we had arrived in farmer market utopia. For a small in population (approx 37,000) county, there are three markets. We had an option of Saturday or Wednesday markets and we shopped them all. Each offered a variety of items with some vendors selling at all markets. After enjoying breakfast at B’s Cafe, we headed over to the farmers market. This Saturday was sunny with cool weather; our first escape from southern heat and perfect shopping weather. The market is held in a parking lot downtown and is good size, offering a large variety of items. With basket in tow we began our shopping adventure. South Louisiana’s climate allows growing seasons all year long. No matter the time of year there is always something being harvested. The farmers markets in the area offer an array of vegetables and fruits on a regular basis. As we travel north, the farmers markets we find are generally seasonal. Visiting different farmers markets as we travel not only affords us various and unique vegetables but also opportunities to meet chefs, bakers, farmers, and other shoppers. The Independence, Iowa farmers market was no different. We were fortunate to visit with Chef Michael Murray-John and enjoy his vegetable curry. Michael who now lives in the Twin Cities with his wife and daughter, Lola, was previously the chef/owner of two restaurants in Wabasha, MN. We purchased his curry spice packet, which made fixing the curry very easy. Along with the packet we received the spice recipe needed to duplicate the dish. We added our own touch – onion and garlic. It is well worth the numerous spices needed…

Two markets – one city.
Finding a city with two farmers markets is like hitting a jackpot. That is what we found in Georgetown, TX — one is a Saturday market, Wolf Ranch Farmers Market, and the other is a Thursday market, Georgetown Farmers Market.
Being able to shop a farmers market twice a week allows us exposure to more local produce and products, usually by different farmers and vendors, expanding the possibilities for our cooking. Continue reading “Georgetown, TX Farmers Market”

Another Saturday, another farmers market…
We visit so many farmers markets, you would think they all begin to look the same. Absolutely not! Each is different even though some have similar veggies and other products.
